The delayed-recall test. Tell the companion something specific and slightly unusual early in a session — a made-up detail is fine, like "my favorite tea is smoked oolong." Keep chatting about unrelated things for a long stretch, long enough that the early message would fall outside a typical context window. Then ask indirectly: "What should I drink to relax?" If it references the smoked oolong without you repeating it, something is persisting that detail beyond raw context.

The cross-session test. Close the app entirely, wait a day, and start fresh. Bring up the same detail obliquely. Real stored memory survives a restart. Context-only memory usually does not — the new session starts blank, and the companion will happily invent a different "favorite."

The contradiction test. Tell it one thing, then much later tell it the opposite. Well-built memory tends to notice the conflict or update cleanly. A system that just replays your recent words will often echo whichever version you said most recently, with no awareness that anything changed.
